Food security in a changing world

Tuesday 21 February 14:35 - 15:15

Updated: 02:22:08

Keynote - Prof. Tim Benton, Research Director, Emerging Risks; Director, Environment and Society Programme, Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House

Questions
Chaired by Tom Bradshaw, Deputy President, National Farmers’ Union

Last updated: 02:22:08

You’re talking and emphasising a lot on food security, the environment and diet, but what about the waste of the end product? In 2018, the UK produced 9.5 million tonnes of food waste - 6.6 million tonnes came from U.K. households - which not only contributes to an increased cost, but also millions of tonnes of green house gas emissions. How can we, as a country, tackle this issue in the future to not only reduce food waste and greenhouse gas emissions, but also to increase the availability of food without the need to grow more food?

– Bizza Walters

We have a UK food policy that delegates “cheap food” to the market, encouraging Retailers and Foodservice to import cheaper, sometimes lower standard food than British farmers and growers produce. What policy measures would you introduce to encourage Retailers and Foodservice to buy British?

– Ali Capper

The 2001 outbreak of FMD in the UK was estimated to have cost £5 billion to the private sector and £3 billion to the public sector, damaged the lives of farmers and rural communities, harmed animal welfare, dented the reputation of UK agriculture, and caused a general election to be postponed. Is championing UK biosecurity one of the key pillars to ensuring food security in all sectors of farming?

– Mr Malcolm Morley

What % of the global population is fed through subsistence agriculture and is there such a thing as 'cheap food'.

– Dafydd Owen

Less intensive systems such as grass-fed beef and lamb or lower input regeneratively produced arable systems produce food that is nutritionally better for human health, sustainable and better for the environment. How do you educate the public to purchase this food, make this affordable to consumers whilst allowing farmers to remain profitable in these more extensive systems.

– Louise Penn
