Over 40 people attended an event to launch the NFU鈥檚 Vision for the Uplands in the North on farm in Middleton-In-Teesdale on Friday 5 September.

Members and stakeholders from across the North gathered at Wemmergill Farm in Lunedale to learn about the NFU鈥檚 new document The Uplands: A vision for prosperity, stewardship and resilience.

The document, which was first unveiled at the Great Yorkshire Show, demonstrates how government, farmers and partners can work together to achieve a confident, sustainable future for businesses in the uplands.

Guests to the stakeholder launch included representatives of North York Moors National Park, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Northumberland National Park Authority, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, The Rivers Trust, Natural England, RSPB, The Forestry Commission, North Pennines National Landscape, Lake District National Park and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service.

Event host Alan Stoddart, with farm stockman Bob Day, gave an overview of the farm and the challenges the farm is facing, before NFU North Uplands Chair Dave Stanners led a discussion on the NFU鈥檚 aspirations for the future.

NFU Deputy President David Exwood talked about the document from a national perspective and took questions from the audience.聽After lunch, Alan and Bob gave attendees a guided tour of the farm, before both members and stakeholders were asked to prioritise, and pledge their commitment to, the asks in the Vision.聽

Collaboration is the way forward

NFU Deputy President David Exwood said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a fantastic discussion, lots of stakeholders and farmers going over the issues that affect everybody in these landscapes. It鈥檚 a balanced document with a balanced approach and we think that collaboration is the way forward.聽

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking forward to taking it to Westminster next, in October. This is just the beginning of the conversation.鈥

NFU North Uplands Group Chair Dave Stanners said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a brilliant day talking to stakeholders from across the North about our vision for prosperity, stewardship and resilience. Three other key words we鈥檝e used today are compromise, cooperation and respect, and those are key words for getting the outcomes that we need for the Uplands.

鈥淚 think we鈥檝e really captured the minds of the stakeholders. They really seem to have bought into the idea of the vision and seem keen to help us to bring that vision to life.

鈥淭hank you to Alan Stoddard and Bob Day for hosting the event and showing us around their farm.鈥
