Retailers and processors

This section of the NFU integrated dairy-beef contract business guide considers the relationship with and expectations from retailers and processors. Keep reading for a full list of considerations.

  1. Will you be expected to build/maintain a relationship with a retailer that is aligned to your integrated scheme?
    1. Will you be expected to publicly promote this retailer?
  2. Will there be any standards or protocols you are expected to meet/follow for the retailer e.g. antibiotic usage, organics, grass-fed, soya, additional ‘bolt-ons’ to existing farm assurance schemes?
  3. If a retailer trials or implements new initiatives (e.g. methane suppressing feed products) midway through your calf rearing/finishing, will you be expected to implement them?
    1. Who will pay for the rollout/implementation of these initiatives on farm?
    2. What will be the upfront cost of this?
    3. What will be the long-term financial impact of this on your business?
    4. Will these initiatives impact your farm management?
  4. What processor(s) will your calves be going to? Is this subject to change, and if yes, what notice will you be provided?
