Health

This section of the NFU integrated dairy-beef contract business guide considers the health of the animals, like medical records, vaccines and disease control zone protocols. Keep reading for a full list of considerations.

  1. How will medicine/health/treatment records be kept?
    1. Note: The responsible keeper must record treatments/medicines in accordance with your legal obligations and government guidance, including Food Chain Information.
    2. Are there any requirements from the integrator as to how records must be kept e.g. will you have to use a certain farm software package?
  2. In instances of integrators covering a percentage of mortality per batch, what is the specified threshold?
    1. What is the cost of going over on the mortality percentage allowance e.g., assumed value of stock?
  3. What vaccines, if any, will the calves have?
    1. Note: for example, BVD, IBR, Pneumonia, Leptospirosis, Rotavirus.
  4. Will the integrator expect you to vaccinate calves in line with a specified protocol?
    1. Who will pay for vaccines calves have not had but are expected to have?
  5. Will the calves have treatment records from their previous holdings, including any medicine/vaccine batch numbers?
  6. Will the males have been castrated?
  7. What was the health status of the farm the calves were raised on e.g. BVD free or monitored? Would you wish to see a guarantee of this?
  8. When did the calves receive colostrum? Did they receive colostrum within 6 hours of birth? Do the calves have any IgG records?
    1. Note: Colostrum is absolutely critical for calf performance.
    2. You could discuss colostrum tests with your integrator. If tests are something you wish to do, what are the cost of tests?
  9. Are there any health/performance targets that must be achieved while the calves are on unit? What are they? Is it clear how you and the integrator will know they have been met?
  10. Will the calves have been through a market?
  11. Will the calves have been through a collection point/lairage?
  12. Will the calves have been quarantined? Were they isolated when born, reared and when going through marts/collection points/lairages (if applicable)?
  13. Will you be expected to work with a particular vet? Or can you carry on working with your own private vet?
    1. In the instance of working with a private vet, will the integrator require sight of treatments/ medicines written into the farm’s health plan/protocol?
  14. How soon must you tell the integrator that medicine/treatment will be administered?
  15. What are the protocols that must be followed if calves are caught in a disease control zone?
    1. Note: This is difficult to plan for as no one knows what disease restrictions could be put in place, but you could consider establishing contingency plans in preparation for a potential disease outbreak.
    2. Who will bear the business financial impact of any control and/or restricted zones?
