Signed by NFU President Tom Bradshaw, RSPB CEO Beccy Speight, and Chief Executive at the BRC (British Retail Consortium) Helen Dickinson, the letter warns that cuts to the farming budget will place environmental work and farm businesses under threat.
This follows reports of what may be announced as part of the Chancellor's Spending Review on 11 June.Â
The NFU, alongside several key groups, has repeatedly voiced concerns over the impact any cuts to the farming budget would have on farmers' ability to deliver key environmental targets.
Signatories to the letter write that British food is renowned for its high environmental, animal welfare and safety standards, but that these standards can come with additional costs.Â
It concludes: "For UK farming to thrive, we must not abandon our environment, our countryside and our homegrown food. This is what British consumers want and our environment needs."
