Yorkshire West Riding hosted its first virtual county Let's Talk meeting where we were joined by North Regional Policy Manager Adam Briggs and County Chair Richard Pears. The meeting facilitated an update on all the latest policy work, meetings and issues arising in the area. Bluetongue disease proved to be a requested topic which led up to Skipton hosting their Livestock Disease meeting later in the week.
The meeting was highly attended, with speakers from Craven Vets, APHA and Cattle Craven Mart. Throughout the evening members discussed the impact of Blue Tongue on their livestock including vaccination options, updates on biosecurity and the national approach to wider disease threat and the implication of restrictions on breeding and store livestock.
Further to meetings, show season has had a successful start with a warm Honley Show, where members were able to meet their local team and participate in a fun competition to guess how many balloons were in a Land Rover Defender. Great Yorkshire Show also proved to be a highlight of engagement, with MPs, Ministers, retailers, Mayors and many more visiting the NFU stand over the four days, alongside farmers and growers from all over the county.
Up and down the county, through numerous sectors the NFU provide fantastic industry programmes for farmers and growers. We are now looking for our next participants for the Sugar Industry Programme (SIP), jointly funded by NFU Sugar and British Sugar. The SIP is designed to raise awareness and understanding of the domestic sugar sector and equip participants with the knowledge and training to be advocates for the industry. The programme is an excellent opportunity for next-generation growers to learn more about the wider supply chain, build valuable lasting connections and develop their professional skills.
Applications opened on 11 August and will close on 1 September. Growers are invited to submit their CV alongside a covering letter outlining their experience within the sector and why they are interested in taking part in the programme.
