Your Somerset county NFU update

NFU County Adviser (Somerset)

Dry weather, nature recovery and rural crime

It has been nice to finally see some rain across Somerset after what has been an extremely dry summer.

In my last update I mentioned the work we have been doing on lobbying the RPA and you can find out more on NFU online.

If you or any of your neighbours are struggling please do get in contact with your local group secretaries. The Addington Fund dry weather emergency grant is also available for applications and support.

We await the launch of the public consultation on Somerset's Local Nature Recovery Strategy, which I’d really encourage you to take a look at when it goes live. We will also be holding a Somerset member webinar on the consultation so look out for this date when it lands in your inbox.

Jeremy Padfield, your NFU rural crime lead, has been working hard with the ongoing rural crime issues across Somerset. We do have 10 poacher blocks available to NFU members so if you would like one on your farm please get in contact with your local office.

We are focusing this year’s NFU Somerset Countryside Day on engaging with Avon and Somerset police officers on rural crime issues and will update you all on the outcomes of this meeting at the end of September.

We are now heading into branch Annual Open Meeting season so please do attend your local branch’s event, there are some great events happening with farming mental health, health and safety, skittles and farm walks!

Finally, elections are open until the end of the month for the following Somerset commodity board positions: Poultry, Livestock, Dairy, and Crops.

If you are interested in standing or would like more information about what is involved, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Local Nature Recovery Strategy opens to public consultation in October

The Somerset Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) is opening to public consultation next month.

Somerset Council will be holding a webinar on Thursday 6th October 1:30-2:30 to gather feedback on their proposals. You can register for the webinar .

In this session they will cover:

  • LNRS overview
  • Overview of the map - what does it mean to me (in or out of the mapped space)?
  • Pros and concerns
  • Timeline and next steps
  • What does the LNRS delivery stage look like and who owns/drives it?
  • How to respond to the public consultation
  • Question and answer session.

LNRSs are spatial strategies which plan, map, and create priorities for nature in a given area.

Strategies will include a Local Habitat Map and a statement of biodiversity priorities.

Their principal aim is to create space for nature to deliver BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain) and they will help identify the priorities and locations for nature recovery in a given area.

You can find out more about LNRSs here.

Meeting with the PCC highlighting rural crime

We recently met with PCC Claire Moody and MP for Tiverton and Minehead Rachel Gilmour to discuss concerns around increasing rural crime across the county.

In June, the NFU Mutual Rural Crime report revealed that Somerset has seen a concerning increase in the cost of rural crime by 168.7% since 2023, making it the most affected county in the region.

We discussed with Claire the importance of a fully staffed team, resources to tackle organised crime, and the impact of thefts on the rural community.

Please read the update below from the Rural Crime Team and remember to remember to report all rural crimes to the police.
