September update for Essex

Even though harvest is coming to an end, please do remember to take five, stay alive. Take five minutes to pause, to think, and to take care of your physical and mental wellbeing. Whether it’s checking machinery, preparing for livestock handling, or simply taking a breather during a hectic day, those five minutes can help you identify risks, prevent accidents and protect your mental health.

Water continues to be an issue after an exceptionally dry season. The Addington Fund, which incorporates Forage Aid has launched a , with input from the NFU, for farmers struggling to feed stock due to the ongoing drought.

The annual Back British Farming Day will take place on the 10 September 2025, where MPs will come together to celebrate the importance of British Agriculture. We will be using this opportunity to engage with target rural Labour MPs on the importance of the Family Farm Tax ahead of the Autumn Budget. »Ê¼Ò»ªÈËalso have an article on how you can get involved on the tenth year of Back British Farming day, to celebrate British farming - Back British Farming Day – how to get involved.

On the day the Chelmsford NFU Branch will be in Chelmsford town centre to celebrate the work of Essex farmers and growers. This event offers a great opportunity to engage with the public, raise awareness to the public about where their food comes from, and highlight some of the challenges currently facing the farming community. The branch is looking for donations of produce for their display and volunteers who can help staff the stand and chat with visitors on the day. If you can support in either way, please email Chelmsford group secretary John Harvey on [email protected].

Key topics discussed with Colchester MP

The family farm tax, food security and water resources were among topics discussed when the NFU met Pam Cox, Labour MP for Colchester, at Colchester Livestock Market.

NFU President Tom Bradshaw joined us for the meeting, along with Branch Chair Robert Blyth, Vice Branch Chair David Lord, Gerald Ketley, Graham Ellis of Stanfords and County Adviser Hamish Debnam-Sharp.

Many businesses and incomes in Essex are underpinned by agriculture and the wider rural community, so this was a good opportunity for discussions between our members and the Colchester MP.
